I know my period is going to start over tonight, tomorrow but at least within a few days. As a young girl, it has always annoyed my freedom.
I will try enlisting some:-
- No white pants or any light colored pants
- Get ready for period cramps
- No more caffeine, too sour foods and dairy products ( not to forget I mentioned ‘’too much’’)
- Cancel long trips, if possible cancel going outside
- Afraid to do regular full-length exercise
- Concentrate on blood stains
- Spend extra time washing the clothes with the blood stains
- Avoid deep and argumentative conversations (irritation, mood swings so better avoid it)
- Increment in sweats and body temperature
- Reminder : carry sanitary pads
- Carry extra plastic to wrap the pad that needs to get disposed
- Conscious enough to wrap pads with newspaper and plastic (though I have given up on this idea for couple of years now)
- Make sure you wear long dress on top to cover your back and carry jacket (for extra safety)
- Scared to travel long distances ( I have had embarrassing moments in bus)
- If important assignment is piled up during that particular time and exam is there ( most of the time I mess up)
- If you have caught common cold get ready to experience ‘blood volcano’ after every sneeze and cough
- Make sure you avoid loud laughs that takes up your energy else again, ‘blood volcano’
- Try everything to avoid smell of menstruation blood
Nepalese household prohibitions are on next level :-
- Not to touch sacred plants ( for eg. Basil plant)
- Avoid going around cattle
- No dairy products
- Don’t get involved in religious and social functions
- Don’t touch ‘Dhamis’ and ‘Jhakris’ as they start shaking like having got seizures
- Don’t look father and brothers or else their life will be shortened
- Don’t touch male member ( even the couples sleep on separate bed)
- Don’t enter kitchen
Though these are some of the things I am affected with but I am extremely aware about the hard times girls have to go through be it using cloth that gets displaced often, work hard on fields, never have privilege to take rest and everyone says ‘’This is nothing new, girls should learn to tolerate, we all have gone through it and so on.'' At least I feel privileged.
