10 reasons why Okhreni of Sindhupalchowk is poorly developed

1) Sindhupalchowk has been exactly resembling the saying “darkest place is always under the candle”. Having only almost 4 hours from the capital, it has not been much developed as it should have been. In addition, it has been severely hit by natural disasters back to back leaving it futile to bounce back.

2) Nepal, being a mountainous country itself, Okhreni as part of Sindhupalchowk is one of them with such a difficult topology that any forms of development needs lots of input and unpredictably less output. In addition, it is one of the largest ward in Melamchi  Municipality.

3) As one can remark, the expansion of the roads are one of the major project running after Melamchi drinking water supply project; maximum government investment is allocated for it.

4) People are hugely concerned just to sustain their life that they barely grow anything for business purpose leaving them onerous to look beyond.

5) Superstitious belief is strongly expressed in terms of faith. For example, when we asked a questionnaire about the COVID; the person suddenly started expressing to us their unfaltering belief that no cases is seen in their village due to their mountain range and their deities acting as barrier for that air to enter the village.

6) On average, girls are found delivering child around the age of 17, which on that type of socio-economic aspect of the society deprive them of higher level of education, income-generating activities and women empowerment.

7) Many women are seen performing home delivery because they feel it is something that every other person in village and their neighborhood does so, that undoubtedly  comprises their health status.

8) The authorities, toppers or any enthusiastic person with good amount of potential are prominently seen leaving for the Kathmandu shedding behind availability of share of experience, opportunities and new dimension to a normal paradigm.

9) Means of communication is unsubstantial. I have never heard any person listening to even radio as what normally villagers do.

10) The make-up of a certain ethnic community for example in here, maximum ‘Tamangs’ that are unwilling to take risk on education rather focusing on income sources makes them determined only on a thing, so a certain dimension to thinking is never challenged like in the capital itself that serves as the ‘’melting pot of all ethnic groups”. This brings a sense of no challenge by the outsiders thus, cannot bring out the hidden potential of Okhreni.
