1.War, violence and increasing refugee populations
Of the 22 countries in the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region, about half are in acute or protracted states of emergency. People are at increased risk of disease in areas that are inaccessible due to violence and insecurity.Compounding the problem, 20 million people in the afflicted region have fled the conflict areas in search of safety.
There are many international and civil wars going on around the world.Afghanistan,Ukraine,Libiya, Burkina Faso, United States- North Korea,Kashmir,Venezuela,Ethiopia,Yemen and The United States, Iran, Israel, and the Persian Gulf are some the conflicts that are taking and might take some serious forms in nearby future if remain unsolved.
2.Irrational use of resources
According to WHO,''Should the global population reach 9.6 billion by 2050, the equivalent of almost three planets could be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles.
- With rises in the use of non-metallic minerals within infrastructure and construction, there has been significant improvement in the material standard of living. The per capita “material footprint” of developing countries increased from 5 metric tons in 2000 to 9 metric tons in 2017.
- 93% of the world’s 250 largest companies are now reporting on sustainability.''
- Among 17 sustainable goals,Goal 12 is to Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- 3.Technological dependence
- Adam Alter in his book Irresistible, writes about technology addiction, suggesting that 40 percent of people have some kind of internet-based addiction, be that to social media, pornography or email (which the average worker checks 36 times an hour).Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media applications may serve as ideal social areas for individuals who appreciate and are attracted to engaging in ego-enhancing activities whereas online gaming on various withdrawal symptoms.
- 4.Sedentary lifestyles
- According to WHO,60 to 85% of people in the world—from both developed and developing countries—lead sedentary lifestyles, making it one of the more serious yet insufficiently addressed public health problems of our time.Approximately 2 million deaths per year are attributed to physical inactivity, prompting WHO to issue a warning that a sedentary lifestyle could very well be among the 10 leading causes of death and disability in the world.
- 5. Substance abuse
- According to WHO,
- The harmful use of alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths each year.
- On average every person in the world aged 15 years or older drinks 6.2 litres of pure alcohol per year.
- Less than half the population (38.3%) actually drinks alcohol, this means that those who do drink consume on average 17 litres of pure alcohol annually.
- Some 31 million persons have drug use disorders.
- Almost 11 million people inject drugs, of which 1.3 million are living with HIV, 5.5 million with hepatitis C, and 1 million with both HIV and hepatitis C.
